Hopefully, oral surgery procedures are not the first thought in you mind when you schedule a dentist appointment. Most oral surgery procedures are preventable with proper dental hygiene and regular routine dental check ups. Scheduling a dental checkup and cleaning at least twice a year will help prevent any need for oral surgery procedures.
During a regular visit, your dentist is looking for any tooth decay, worn filings, gum disease and other changes in your teeth and gums that may need fixing. Many of these problems, like gingivitis, are completely preventable with regular brushing and flossing. You can treat gum disease early by increasing your use of dental floss. This gum saving invention was originally made of silk during World War II. Soon after we began using nylon fibers.
If you have the common fear of going to the dentist, there now solutions for you. Many dentists now offer sedation dentistry for those patients who have anxiety about their regular visit, or are overly sensitive the the discomfort of routine procedures. Research your local dentists for one that offers nitrous oxide sedation. This form of sedation is extremely relaxing, does not require needles, and does not leave you feeling drugged for the remainder of your day.
Hopefully you have been seeing your dentist regularly and they were able to catch your gum disease early. If not, you may be experiencing some painful symptoms of gum disease. Gum and tooth sensitivity, bleeding gums, and gum line receding are only a few things you may experience. If you have let these symptoms go, you may need to have one or more oral surgery procedures to reverse gum disease issues.
Oral surgery procedures should be treated like any other surgical procedure. There will be pain, risk, and recovery time associated with your oral surgery procedures. For example, a dental implant is placed into the bone socket of the missing tooth. It can take two to four months for the bone to heal around the implant, keeping it securely in place. A more simple treatment for gum disease, like scalloping, can leave your gums sore and raw for days at a time as well. You must wait for the gums to heal and regenerate, and often have to have several treatments in the effort of curing gum disease.
According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, two thirds of patients seeking cosmetic procedures are females. Cosmetic dentistry procedures can be as simple as teeth whitening and as serious as a root canal or dental implant. Regardless of the reason someone is seeking cosmetic dentistry, they average patient spends 5,000 to 6,000 dollars on their procedures.
It is always advised to take measures to avoid oral surgery procedures. Talk to your dentist about how to make your regular visits as comfortable and accommodating as possible. The expense and discomfort of oral surgery procedures will outweigh your fears of regular cleanings. If you do require oral surgery procedures, make sure you speak at length with your regular dentist and oral surgeon to know exactly what the procedure entails and exactly how much it will cost you out of pocket. Even the scalloping I had to have done was excruciating and not fully covered by my insurance.
I cant even pick up the phone to call the dentist I am so paralyzed with irrational fear. Can they sedate me just to make the appointment?
